One of my friends asked me this question, “What is your passion”? I have lots of passions. How is it possible to choose just one? She then told me about an exercise she had done. “Name your three favorite movies off the top of your head,” she said.
Although I can’t remember exactly what they were then, I’m sure they were probably three of the following, as that’s what comes to mind now: Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Sound of Music, While You Were Sleeping, Sense and Sensibility, Iron Will, or Rudy. Truth be told, I could continue listing many others as movie names are still popping into my head now, but that’s not what she asked. She asked for the first three.
What is the common thread with Star Wars and The Sound of Music? Adventure? The battle of Good over Evil? In all my favorites, the good guy always wins. I haven’t even watched Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark in many years, so why would those movies come to mind first? Star Wars has a strong biblical undertone. Does that mean that I have a passion for discovering God’s purpose for me in this life? Or does it just mean that as a pre-teen, when the movie was released, it made such a big impression on me being the first of it’s kind, that I logged it into my memory banks for all eternity as a favorite?
Whatever the reason, there are some consistencies in most all my favorite movies. There must be a happy ending. The underdog must triumph. Good always defeats evil and of course there must be some kind of romantic interest.
So how does this identify my passion?
Forgetting about the movies, I would say that my passions include helping others, in particular the disadvantaged. In all of the above movies, except “Raiders”, I can see how that fits. My other big passion is music, which excludes only While You Were Sleeping and Sense and Sensibility, so perhaps all my favorite movies come with really great soundtracks. Either way, perhaps there is something to this favorite movie thing.
So, if you are “over the hill” and trying to find passion in life, what are your favorite movies?
